Memory impairment is the cardinal factor when assessing for dementia - yet most current methods and tools can't detect early signs of memory loss or mild cognitive impairment (MCI); they are difficult and time-consuming for a GP to use, and insensitive in 50 to 60 year-olds and those with high levels of education. Furthermore, they can be inaccurate when English is not the patient's native language.

CANTABmobile is a simple touch screen test that takes between 7 and 10 minutes to complete and is based on the proven assessment tool, CANTAB Paired Associates Learning (PAL). Neutral to both language and culture, it is easily and reliably administered on a tablet screen by a nurse or healthcare assistant after minimal training.

The test compares the patient's result instantly with a normative database of over 5000 healthy adults aged between 50-90; showing you how the patient's memory compares to the level expected for someone of their age, gender and education. A simple depression questionnaire and Activities of Daily Living screener complete the picture for those whose score is lower than the norm.

The result is then instantly presented for the GP using a simple traffic light system. This indicates whether the conclusions suggest: Investigate, Monitor or Reassure.

How does it work?

CANTABmobile uses a specially adapted version of Paired Associates Learning (PAL). This has a 25 year pedigree in scientific research and pharmaceutical trials and is the subject of over 70 published clinical papers.

It tests a patient's episodic memory - the deterioration of which is one of the earliest warning signs of dementia. The voice-over instructions for the test can be selected in over 15 languages, and once the test is complete the results can

then be uploaded, printed or emailed for referral. Most importantly, recent published data indicates that the system can give early advance warning of a probable dementia diagnosis.
